Update on education (1)

We recently held a video conference call with the Trustees in Kenya at Happy home and got some interesting and encouraging updates on what is happening with the children's education.

All children are now looked after in their homes with guardians, 17 of primary school age and 36 secondary school age. They are provided with all requirements for primary school and for their upkeep. Most schools, primary and secondary are sponsored by churches and there is one lesson each week on Christian Education. They attend church on Sundays, and this is confirmed at visits by representatives from Happy Home. The government has introduced a scheme for all those in form four who don’t go to college or university; they are all entered into artisan courses to give them something to support themselves, to make them self reliant – some of these schemes are community sponsored. For graduates there are fewer job opportunities – the government is encouraging people to start their own businesses.

The primary school on the site at Happy Home continues to grow and develop. It is well supported by the community. Walter Sagwe is Vice Chair of the Trustees of Happy Home and is director of the school. The numbers of children registered are shown below. As you can see, the school has gown to be quite large. Happy Home Kenya Trust in the UK is unable to support the school with its operational costs, but where it is appropriate and where we are able to, we will offer support with some capital costs.
